STONE CONSERVATION

Crowland Abbey, Lincolnshire

Conservation of all 35 sculptures 12th - 13th century.

The Abbey has one of the country’s finest West Fronts with 12th century statuary carved from Barnack stone. I was involved with consultancy and carrying out all the practical conservation to all of the stone statuary on the West Front of the Abbey.

This important building contains sculptures from 12th -15th century. The works included sensitive cleaning, consolidation and mortar repair followed by sheltercoating. The work had complex issues with some areas of stonework suffering very advanced deterioration. Hot lime mortars have been explored and used on this project.
